Sustainability has always been at the heart of what we do. Not just in the role we play in creating sustainable communities through the provision of vital qualified public service staff such as teachers, nurses or operating theatre staff but also as a major employer and consumer of resources.
Edge Hill University has been providing Higher Education for more than 125 years and currently offers over 200 degree courses to over 14,000 students.
The University takes great effort and pride in designing and building new facilities of the highest quality not just in aesthetic terms but in the sustainable way in which those buildings operate.
We are also working hard to manage the impact of travel to and from the University and to reduce the size of our carbon footprint. Edge Hill University is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2035 for emissions scopes 1, 2 and 3. The commitment was made on 20/03/2023 by the Board of Governors.
In everything we do we are committed to improving the environmental performance of the University for the benefit not just of those currently engaged with the University but those students, staff and other stakeholders who will be part of our wider Edge Hill Community in the future.
People and Planet 2025/26 Results

Edge Hill University’s Institutional Sustainability Policy clearly articulates the University’s commitment to managing the environmental impacts of our activities. This is supported by our Environmental Sustainability Report, which reinforces the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Our Environmental Sustainability Strategy translates these policy declarations into meaningful objectives and targets, and sets out how we intend to deliver these in the accompanying delivery plan. Updates will be provided against the delivery plan on an annual basis.
The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.
The University is working hard to contribute towards achieving the UN Sustainability Goals, find out more using the link below.
Edge Hill University aims to increase awareness of environmental and sustainability issues by organising events and campaigns that enhance understanding and provide practical ideas and solutions that students, staff and the local community can benefit from.
ach year we run our weekly Sustainability Fair which features a range of activities to demonstrate and educate around sustainability. This academic year the event ran for a week in November 2025 and featured Biffa waste, several of our energy management contractors, Queenscourt Hospice and the Horticultural Society. It was great to see so many people in attendance to learn more about sustainability at Edge Hill. Watch this space for news about the 2026/27 events.
To support student engagement with sustainability either on campus or in the wider community, we have launched the Student Sustainability Initiative Fund they can apply for. Please click on the link below to find out more about this fund.
We are always looking for volunteers to help out with campaigns and events.
We now offer a student intern placement each year to our students, this runs for a full academic year. We now offer students an opportunity to get involved in auditing sustainability at EHU, this focuses on auditing ESD within modules.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities then please get in touch via email.
There are a number of sustainability related SU Societies that students may also be interested in joining to support sustainability at the University, this includes the Sustainability Society.
We invite students to be part of the Sustainability Champions network and also SustainNET.
As part of our review of the Institutional Sustainability Committee membership we now have student representation on this committee to ensure that students are involved in decision making processes around sustainability at EHU.
Sustainability Champions – Staff Engagement
We have a network of over 48 staff volunteers, covering all service areas and faculties. Sustainability Champions are making positive environmental changes in their areas which are shared at network gatherings.
We offer the Sustainability Champions the opportunity to gain new skills and insights into sustainability at EHU. For example, we have had our waste contractor present to the Sustainability Champions in the past about waste management on campus.
SustainNET (sustainability network)
SustainNET was formed in February 2020 as a large network community of staff and students passionate about sustainability. It works to advance the University’s sustainability agenda both on and off campus on multiple fronts, these being mainly research and knowledge exchange, student engagement, education for sustainable development, and local community partnership. SustainNET has over 100 members and is managed by a Leadership Team.
All staff, whether academic or professional support services, must attend a Corporate Induction once they have started at EHU. As part of this induction a section delivered by the Corporate Sustainability Manager, or appointed representative, will introduce staff to sustainability at EHU including how it relates to staff, how to get involved, and where to find out more information.
All staff are also required to undertake mandatory training around sustainability when they start at EHU. This training must then be repeated every 3 years, engagement with this is monitored and reported on via a range of forums across the Institution.
This webpage provides a great starting point to find out more about getting involved as a member of staff or you can get in touch with the team using our contact details below.
Trade Unions
We invite Trade Unions to be part of the Sustainability Champions network and also SustainNET.
As part of our review of the Institutional Sustainability Committee membership we now have Trade Union representation on this committee to ensure that students are involved in decision making processes around sustainability at EHU. Both Unison and UCU have membership on this meeting.
Student Induction
All students receive an oversight regarding sustainability at EHU as part of their induction including information in their student handbook, and for residential students there is a section in the Residential Essentials induction document.
